Hilltop Property
Kent, NY
A hilltop property ablaze with color

Context
The clients sought to transform their suburban property, which was dominated by non-native trees and shrubs, into a vibrant, ecologically responsible landscape that celebrates native plantings.
Concept
Hortulus Animae implemented a comprehensive plan, prioritizing ecological sensitivity and aesthetic richness. Vast portions of the lawn were were reclaimed, transformed into swaths of naturalistic native plantings, ablaze with color. 20,000 bulbs were layered into the landscape, ensuring a dynamic display of color across the seasons. The hot tub was repositioned to highlight the views of the Hudson Highlands, and the pool area became a private sanctuary, enveloped by exuberant, sensory-rich plantings. To protect and nurture these plantings, a deer fence was installed, reducing browsing pressure and allowing the garden to flourish undisturbed.
Impact
The property was prone to severe stormwater runoff, presenting a significant challenge. Addressing this, the landscape team reconfigured the existing swales, optimizing water flow to mitigate disruption. Additionally, a rain garden was established, complete with a retaining basin densely planted with riparian wetland perennials and shrubs. This ecological solution not only captured and managed stormwater during heavy weather events but also played a crucial role in preventing erosion and protecting the landscape’s integrity.
