Historical elegance fuses with ecological landscaping design

Context
The owners of this 4400-acre Historic Landmark sought to honor and enhance the estate's heritage while integrating an ecological approach, infusing the geometric gardens with native plants that delight through the seasons.

Concept
When we embarked on this project, the once-magnificent landscape had become a fragmented patchwork, losing its cohesion and ecological vibrancy. Our task was not only to restore the grandeur of the gardens but also to revitalize their ecological impact, weaving together history and sustainability in a seamless tapestry of design.

Using the concept of an old palimpsest as a guide we restored the layers of this elegant formal garden. By leveraging native plants and geometric formality, our design preserved the estate's heritage and enhanced its visual impact. The reimagined gravel parterre terraces, great lawn borders, garden rooms, reflecting pools, and native meadows complement the architectural grandeur of the estate while promoting ecological sustainability and functional beauty.

Impact
Given the site's deep history—spanning over 250 years—our approach required a meticulous inventory and analysis of every plant across the 30 acres of formal gardens. This process allowed us to determine which historical plantings should be preserved, which could be reinterpreted, and which had lost their relevance in the broader vision for the landscape. The challenge lay in distilling centuries of layered plantings into a coherent and meaningful plant palette, striking a delicate balance between honoring the past and fostering a more resilient and ecologically diverse future.
